Without many starters and with an improvised defense due to injuries and the suspension of Jérôme Boateng, Lyon managed to win the three points thanks to a penalty converted by Moussa Dembélé in the 15th minute.

After this victory, Lyon are provisionally tenth, while Saint-Etienne are mired after their seventh consecutive defeat and continue to sink in Ligue 2.

For Lyon, the goal of finishing on the podium is still a long way off, but with this victory they were provisionally six points behind Olympique de Marseille (3rd).

"It's an important and well-deserved result," Lyon coach Peter Bosz said after the game.

"We didn't get the second goal and that's why I didn't stay calm until the end", acknowledged the coach of the local team.

The leaders, Paris Saint-Germain, welcome Reims (14th) on Sunday.

Before this weekend, PSG are 11 points ahead of second-placed Nice (16th), who also visit Metz on Sunday.
